.coop is a sponsored top-level domain intended for the use of cooperatives, wholly owned subsidiaries, and other organisations that exist to promote or support co-operatives. In the typical style of most generic top-level domains, or "gTLDs", .coop is sometimes pronounced in word form as 'dot-co-op' although not all users of the top-level domain (TLD) agree on this usage.

It was created as a result of the announcement by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in late 2000 of a phased release of seven new intended in part to allow TLD users to choose names that were easier for users to locate them on the Internet since short, easy-to-remember names were in short supply in the .com domain. It was initially proposed by the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) and was backed by a many co-ops and co-op groups around the world including the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA). The technical environment was developed by the worker co-operative Poptel in the UK and became operational on January 30, 2002.

Its sponsor is DotCooperation LLC (also known as dotCoop), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) and is responsible for the operation of the TLD including the verification of registrations. In 2005, the Midcounties Co-operative became the Registry Operator for the .coop gTLD through a subsidiary (Midcounties Co-operative Domains.) DynDNS was hired as the sole DNS provider for the registry in 2006.[1]

Active .coop domains are automatically included in the directory.coop site and registrants also receive a .coop eNewsletter to keep them informed about the Internet, .coop and the global cooperative community. Registrations are processed via accredited ICANN registrars or resellers.

.Coop domains are in use around the world although many co-ops, as businesses in the global community, also maintain a .com, .org or country code domain as well to identify themselves both as a co-op and as a business.
