• January 15 – Harry Truman becomes the first US president to broadcast his farewell address on radio and television.
• March 19 – The Academy Awards are simulcast on both radio and television. This marks the first time that the awards show appears on television.
• 3 May – The West German Federal President, Theodor Heuss, inaugurates the Deutsche Welle international radio service.

• Ozark Jubilee begins as a weekly two-and-a-half-hour live broadcast over KWTO-AM on July 17. On August 2, ABC Radio begins carrying 25 minutes of the program nationally.
• Rocky Fortune, a half-hour detective drama starring Frank Sinatra, begins airing on NBC on October 6. It aired on Tuesday nights immediately following Dragnet on NBC's schedule.

• March 3 – Life with Luigi ends its run on CBS.
• March 31 – Cavalcade of America (1935-1953) ends its run on NBC.
