Alpha Gruis (α Gru / α Gruis) is the brighest star in the constellation Grus. It has the traditional name Alnair (sometimes Al Na’ir or Al Nair), derived from the Arabic النائر al-na’ir or النير الذنب al-nayyir al-dhanab meaning "The Bright One of the Tail" (of the Southern Whale). Confusingly, Alnair was also given as the proper name for Zeta Centauri by a navigator in the middle of the 20th century.[1]
