Asnières-sur-Seine (French pronunciation: [anjɛʁ]) is a commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 7.9 km (4.9 mi). (4.9 miles) from the center of Paris. It is one of the most densely populated municipalities in Europe.

Asnières-sur-Seine was originally called simply Asnières. The name Asnières was recorded for the first time in a papal bull of 1158 as Asnerias, from Medieval Latin asinaria, meaning "donkey farm". The poor soil of Asnières, where heather grew in Medieval times, was probably deemed only suitable for the breeding of donkeys.

On February 15, 1968 the name of the commune became officially Asnières-sur-Seine (meaning "Asnières upon Seine"), in order to distinguish it from other communes of France also called Asnières.

¹This group is made up largely of pieds-noirs from Northwest Africa, followed by former colonial citizens who had French citizenship at birth (such as was often the case for the native elite in French colonies), and to a lesser extent foreign-born children of French expatriates. Note that a foreign country is understood as a country not part of France as of 1999, so a person born for example in 1950 in Algeria, when Algeria was an integral part of France, is nonetheless listed as a person born in a foreign country in French statistics.
² An immigrant is a person born in a foreign country not having French citizenship at birth. Note that an immigrant may have acquired French citizenship since moving to France, but is still considered an immigrant in French statistics. On the other hand, persons born in France with foreign citizenship (the children of immigrants) are not listed as immigrants.

It is also served by Asnières-sur-Seine station on the Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare suburban rail line.

The Cimetière des Chiens is believed to be the first zoological necropolis in the world.

Asnières is the birthplace of Henri Barbusse, 1873, writer of Under Fire.

Arsenal Football Club defender William Gallas was born in this suburb of Paris.

Lucie Dery, Academy awards-winning actress, musician and writer, was also born in this suburb of Paris. Following a love triangle scandal involving her, Robert Pattinson and Tom Sturridge, she is currently residing here for a few months as of May 2009 with friend Corinne Remillet.
