Denzil Llewellyn Douglas (1953 - ) was sworn in as the Second Prime Minister of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis immediately following the Saint Kitts and Nevis Labour Party's election victory in July 1995.

[edit] Early life
Douglas was born on 14 January 1953[1] on the north island village of St. Pauls. He was First Young Labour Representative on the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party National Executive.
[edit] Education and private career
He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977 and a Degree in Medicine in 1984. In 1986 he established a private medical practice as a family physician and served as President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Medical Association in the late 1980s.

Douglas was elected M.P. for St. Christopher (No.6) ward (Newton Ground, St. Paul's, Dieppe Bay, Saddlers, and Harris) in the National Assembly of Saint Kitts and Nevis in 1989 and appointed Leader of the Opposition. That year he was also elected leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.
He restructured and re-energized the party in preparation for its 1995 electoral victory. He was appointed Prime Minister of the Federation in 1995, re-appointed Prime Minister in March 2000 and again in October 2004.
Douglas was elected Deputy Chairman of the Labour Party in 1987 and re-elected in March 2000. The Labour Party won a third term on October 25 with seven of the eight seats on St. Kitts in the eleven-member National Assembly.
He is Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Security, Immigration, Sustainable Development, Lands, Tourism, Sports & Culture. In such capacities Dr. Douglas plays an active leadership role in many regional and international organisations:

Dr. Douglas is the first Caribbean Leader to receive the Ghandi- King-Ikeda Peace Award and was also honoured as an outstanding graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and is the recipient of a Legacy Award from the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies in New York.
The Republic of China (Taiwan), and Venezuela recently decorated Prime Minister Douglas with the Order of Brilliant Star with Special Grand Cordon and the Order of the Liberator (First Class) respectively.
Former United States Presidents, George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton praised Douglas for his leadership role in the fight against HIV/AIDS.[citation needed] In November 2005 he was presented with a plaque by United States Congressman Charles Rangel. The United States Congressional Black Caucus also presented a plaque to Dr. Douglas.[citation needed]
He is the Prime Ministerial spokesman on HIV/AIDS and other health related matters in the CARICOM quasi Cabinet.[citation needed]
