The largest urban areas in the Nordic countries can be defined according to guidelines laid down by the statistical bureaux in each country.
In Denmark, Norway and Sweden urban areas may consist of several towns, settlements or suburbs linked together across municipality borders. In other cases, the urban area is smaller than the municipality itself.
In Finland and Iceland, statistics more likely to be based on the figures for the whole municipality. The Helsinki urban area, if seen as one agglomeration, has just over one million inhabitants and ranks as number three, after Stockholm and Copenhagen. If seen as separate urban areas, Helsinki ranks as the fifth Nordic city with a population of 565,911, and Espoo and Vantaa each rank among the major Nordic towns with 236,301 and 191,221, respectively.
The largest metropolitan areas in the Nordic countries differ much more in definition than the urban areas.
