The Malayan languages are a branch of the Malayic languages that spread from central Sumatra or possibly western Borneo. Malayic languages include "para-Malay" languages of central Sumatra such as Minangkabau, "aboriginal Malay" languages such as Temuan, and the various Malay languages proper, such as Banjar and Indonesian.

The Malayan languages have several differences in local usage. ISO 639 assign 37 alpha-3 codes to the macrolanguage Malay ^[1].

In ISO 639-1 there is 'ms', ISO 639-2 there are two codes: may/msa. In ISO 639-3 msa is defined as a macrolanguage Papuan Malay [pmy] was split from code 'mly', but is not part of the macrolanguage.^{[citation needed]}
