New 7 Wonders of Nature is a contemporary effort to create a list of seven natural wonders chosen by people through a global poll. It is being organized by a Swiss-based New Open World Corporation (NOWC), after its success in organizing the New Seven Wonders of the World, which where chosen by more than 100 million votes in the first-ever global campaign.

[edit] Stages of the campaign

The project is still in its initial stage, and is open to nominations until 31^st December 2008.^[1] Voting for nominees will continue through July 7, 2009. Then the New7Wonders of Nature Panel of Experts, under the leadership of Prof. Federico Mayor, the longest-standing former Director-General of UNESCO, will review the top 77 nominees and choose the 21 finalists, to be announced on 21 July 2009. The 21 finalists will then be put to popular vote. The final declaration of the New7Wonders of Nature will be in 2011. ^[2]

On 1 January 2009, only one national nominee per country was allowed to proceed: the highest ranked in the voting on 31 December 2008. Therefore at the end of 2008, countries with more than one national nominee were racing to choose the national representative that is allowed to continue into 2009. Nominees shared by more than one country would remain and continue into 2009.

In this campaign, it is important that people from the nominee's countries form Official Supporting Committees (OSC) since New7Wonders must obviously have people to work on behalf of a natural site. A nominee cannot be considered for selection as one of the 21 finalists without an OSC. ^[3]

[edit] Campaign Controversy

The campaign for the seven wonders of nature differs from the campaign for the new seven wonders. Six of the original seven wonders were no longer in existence and warranted a new campaign. The seven wonders of nature are in still existence and still amazing features of nature. Seven Natural Wonders^[4] is a contemporary effort to protect and promote the original seven natural wonders of the world. A petition is available to show support for the original wonders.
