This is Wikipedia's page for Articles for Creation; if you do not have a Wikipedia user account but have an idea and sources for a new article, you can submit them here. If you have an idea for the title of an article, but no content for the article itself, please see Requested articles.

Please follow these directions to submit an article for creation.

First- read this page: Wikipedia:Your first article
Second - try checking whether the article already exists by searching for it.
Third - ensure that your topic meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines, including ones for:
Fourth - make sure that your article is verifiable and contains published sources. Without independent sources your article will be declined.
Finally - click the "Continue" link below.
- Please keep in mind that there are a lot of article submissions, and established users may not have time to immediately review your article. Sometimes, due to a large backlog, a submission may not be declined or accepted for some time. Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia!

Reviewing an article:
- Verify that the submission is not a copyright violation and meets applicable notability guidelines.
- If the article looks suitable for Wikipedia:
  1. Create the article by moving it into mainspace and removing the {{AFC submission}} tag, as well as any AFC related comments or content from earlier, declined submissions.
    - Consider adding the new article to categories, and tagging it with appropriate cleanup templates.
    - If the article is a stub, add the {{stub}} template, or the appropriate category-specific stub templates.
    - Add {{WPAFC}} to the talk page of the new article to flag it as part of the AFC WikiProject. Also add any other Wikiproject banners that would apply to the article.
  2. Add {{subst:Afc talk|Article Name}} to the talk page user who submitted the article, to inform them that their submission was successful.
- If the article does not look suitable for Wikipedia:
  1. Change the {{AFC submission}} tag to {{AFC submission|D}}.
  2. Remove any copyright violations, personal attacks, or patent nonsense from the submission.
  3. Obvious bad-faith submissions may be tagged for speedy deletion if appropriate.
  4. Include a decline reason in the submission template ({{AFC submission|D|reason}}). Write a custom reason with {{AFC submission|D|reason|Your reason here}}, or choose from the list of standard messages as described in the template's documentation page.
Reviewing a redirect:
- If the redirect is appropriate for Wikipedia (see Wikipedia:Redirects):
  1. Create the redirect as you normally would.
    - Consider adding a redirect template message to the redirect page, when appropriate.
    - Add {{subst:WPAFC}} to the talk page of the redirect to flag it as part of the AFC WikiProject.
  2. Add {{subst:afc redirect}} to the bottom of the section containing the request.
  3. Add {{subst:afc a}} to the top of the section, and {{subst:afc b}} to the bottom, below {{subst:afc redirect}}.
- If the redirect is not appropriate for Wikipedia:
  1. Add the reason for declining the redirect to the bottom of the section containing the request, or add {{subst:afc notarget}} if the submitter failed to specify a target for the redirect.
  2. Add {{subst:afc r}} to the top of the section, and {{subst:afc b}} to the bottom, below the decline reason.

Comment: I'm not sure this is appropriate. "Corrupt" can be subjective and categories should not be ambiguous. Furthermore there is no effective way of citing a source to show that an article belongs to a particular category. Therefore categories are not appropriate for potentially libellous material. Comment. In a historical context, this is a perfectly approprite subcategory for Category:Criminals of New York City given the nature of New York politics in the mid-to-late 19th century. All of the above politicans listed above were deeply involved in criminal activity, and could definatly be described as psuedo-underworld figures, despite the fact few of these men were ever brought to trial. Granted, it may not be the most appropriate name but its hardly libellous for men who have been deceased for well over a century. 71.184.44.125 (talk) 20:50, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I might agree with you, but there is nothing in your proposed title that describes its articles as historic. Furthermore I question that it should be a subcategory of Category:Criminals of New York City. It is not necessarily appropriate for a corrupt politician to be labelled a criminal. In short, a category has to be suitable for all its possible contents, not just the ones you personally have in mind. Martin 22:29, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I didn't propose the category. I happened to notice it on WP:AFC and commented when it didn't seem anyone else would respond. As I said, if there's a problem with the proposed title then it should be changed to meet proper naming conventions. The related subcategories listed wouldn't necessarily fulfill this category as not every member of Tammany Hall or political boss were "corrupt". However, its generally that many of these were very much involved in illicit activities well beyond normal political corruption. Both Boss Tweed and Fernando Wood were charged with criminal offenses, John Morrissey ran one of the largest gambling operations in the city while still a U.S. Congressmen, John Kelly, Richard Croker and Timothy Sullivan were collectively responsible for collecting graft and bribe money from gambling resorts, brothels, etc. There's obviously a clear criteria for inclusion here. 72.74.210.152 (talk) 15:04, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Pr Wikipedia:Categorization of people, "Category names do not carry disclaimers or modifiers, so the case for the category must be made clear by the article text. The article must state the facts that result in the use of the category tag and these facts must be sourced." So, eg. John Kelly (U.S. politician) should not be in this category. Putting this cat as a subcat of Category:Leaders of Tammany Hall is dubious, unless it's impossible to be a corrupt politician in New York without belonging to the society. Similar with Category:Political bosses. Placing it as a subcat of Category:Criminals of New York City is probably OK, since only politicians that are convicted of corruption should be placed in it.
