Wikipedia:Requested moves
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
| This page has a backlog that requires the attention of one or more administrators. Please remove this notice when the backlog is cleared. |
| The list of requested page moves is now automatically updated by a bot. Please be sure to adhere to the simplified procedure below. |
|
Requested moves is a place for requesting the retitling of an article, a template, or a page in the Wikipedia namespace. Any logged-in user who has been registered for more than four days and has made at least ten edits can use the [move] tab located at the top of each page to perform simple moves (see Help:Moving a page). However, administrator help is required in some situations. Such moves can be listed here.
In some situations the appropriateness of a move may be under dispute, and discussion is necessary in order to reach a consensus. There is no obligation to list such move requests here; discussions of page moves can always be carried out at the article's talk page without adding an entry. This page may be seen as a place to advertise move debates that would benefit from wider community input, or for users to request assistance from administrators in moving pages.
Most move requests are processed by a handful of regular contributors who are familiar with naming conventions, nonbinding precedents, and page moving procedures. Requests are generally processed after seven days, although backlogs of a few days develop occasionally. If there is a clear consensus after this time, the request will be closed and acted upon. If not, the administrator may choose to re-list the request to allow time for consensus to develop, or close it as "no consensus".
[edit] Processes beyond the scope of this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Renaming an image - upload the image again, but with the name you want. Then change the relevant links to reflect the new name and list the old image at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion.
- Renaming a category - propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template - propose the move at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion.
- Merging two articles - make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged - list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen.
[edit] Requesting uncontroversial moves
If the move you are suggesting is uncontroversial and technically possible, please feel free to move the page yourself. Moves are possible (for registered users with accounts over four days old) when the desired name is a red link, or in cases where the target is a simple redirect—a redirect to the current title, with no prior versions in its edit history. After moving a page, update its text to reflect the new title.
If the only obstacle to an uncontroversial move is a navigation aid (e.g. a redirect or an unnecessary disambiguation page with a minor edit history), the template db-move can be used instead to have that page deleted under criterion for speedy deletion G6.
If there has been any past debate about the best title for the page, or if anyone could reasonably disagree with the move, then treat it as controversial. Otherwise, post your request in the Uncontroversial requests section of this page. If the page has recently been moved without discussion, then you may revert the move and initiate a discussion of the move on the talk page of the article. (See also: Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle.) If this reversion requires administrator assistance, it is also eligible to be listed here. When listing this kind of request, please include a link showing that you have attempted to discuss the page move first.
[edit] Requesting potentially controversial moves
Create a section at the bottom of the talk page of the page you have requested to be moved. It should be formatted like this:
Requested move
A brief reason as to why the name of the page should be changed. Limit this to a single paragraph. ~~~~
Instead of "Requested move", any name is allowed; however, "Requested move" is suggested. "NewName" is what you want the new name of the page to be.
This can also be done by clicking the "new section" tab on the talk page and inserting Note that the Subject/headline should be left blank, as the heading, Requested move, is created along with a location for survey and discussion by this template, and that the template must be subst'd. The template will automatically include your signature.
Optional: Add at the top of the talk page, where "Section" is the name of the heading, if other than "Requested move" — moveheader will assume Requested move.
[edit] Moving several pages at once
Follow the above procedures for one of the pages being moved, creating a centralized location for discussion. Be sure to list all the other pages to be moved, and include your signature at the end of the request by including four tildes (~~~~).
Requested move
A brief reason as to why the name of the page should be changed.<br/>SecondPage → NewSecondPage<br />
ThirdPage → NewThirdPage<br />
etc. ~~~~
For each other page to be moved, add NewName to the top of its talk page. NewName is the proposed name for that page, and Talk:FirstPage is a link to the centralized discussion. Talk:FirstPage defaults to the section name "Requested move", so include a section heading if necessary. Note in the formatting shown above, you can force the list of moves to appear by including <br/> at the end of each line, but not by using an asterisk, * at the beginning of each line.
[edit] Uncontroversial requests
Only list proposals here that are clearly uncontroversial but require administrator help to complete (for example, spelling and capitalization fixes). Do not list a proposed page move in this section if there is any reasonable possibility that it could be opposed by anyone. Please list new requests at the bottom of the list in this section and use rather than copying previous entries. The template will automatically include your signature. No edits to the article's talk page are required. If you object to a proposal listed here, please relist it in the Contested requests section below.
[edit] Contested requests
With the exception of a brief description of the problem or objection to the move proposal, please do not discuss move proposals here. If you support a contested move proposal, please consider following the instructions above to add the proposed page move to the "Other proposals" section below by substituting the move template on the article's talk page. Proposals that remain here after seven days will be removed.
[edit] Current discussions
| There is no need to edit this list manually; a bot will automatically update the page soon after the move template is added to the discussion on the relevant talk page. The entry is removed automatically when the discussion is closed. To make a change to an entry, make the change on the linked talk page. |
This list is also available in a page-link-first format.

- (Discuss) — Stanstead, Quebec (city) → Stanstead, Quebec (town) — This article is about a town, not a city. Student7 (talk) 00:54, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Waikato (region/district) → Waikato — Waikato is the common name for this region, which is the primary meaning of the term. Waikato already redirects here. Right now, there's a very confusing title for this page, which is unnecessary disambiguation. YeshuaDavid • Talk • 00:40, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] July 03, 2009
- (Discuss) — Metro Station (band) → Metro Station — Metro Station is currently a redirect to this article, so it looks like the disambiguation isn't needed. Although most of the links are to this article, there have been a few changes to the redirect, and sometimes it has redirected to Metro station, so I don't know if a move would be uncontroversial. snigbrook (talk) 22:40, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Ballkid → Ball boy — I'm all for gender neutrality, but in this case the word "ballkid" is so very rarely used, and even if it were "ball kid" (with a space) would seem more correct gramatically. I'll suggest "ball boy" at the moment, simply as across all sports there appear to be more ball boys than ball girls. Note, I would propose moving the current Ballboy page to Ballboy (disambiguation). Aubergine (talk) 21:00, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — 2008 South Ossetia war → 2008 Russian-Georgian war — The earliest of the discussions barely qualifies as a discussion, and the one that was held after that was far too unfocused in getting down exactly why something should be the page title. I want to give all viewpoints equal opportunities to express their arguments, and I feel this is best done in a coordinated environment where the individual arguments are clearly delineated. It works like this: a subsection notes the proposal, and subsections underneath that for the reasons. After a period of time, a neutral party will close the discussion. I have decided that this person will not be me. Please, limit the discussion to be relevant to the name of the page, and not because of procedures. —harej (talk) 20:47, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

- (Discuss) — Lotus uliginosus → Lotus pedunculatus — Lotus pedunculatus is the name used by Stace, which is the standard text used by UK botanists (C A Stace, Interactive Flora of the British Isles, a Digital Encyclopaedia. Online version). I propose we move this article there. Richard New Forest (talk) 18:38, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Tauon → Tau_(particle) — The name "tauon" is rarely used in the field of physics for the third generation lepton. The name "tau lepton" is occasionally used. The name "tau" or "τ" is nearly always used. I realize that this is inconsistent with the naming of the muon and the electron (second and first generation lepton, respectively), but wikipedia should describe, not prescribe, usage. The Wilschon (talk) 17:01, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Blackened (song) → Blackened — This is the only entry listed on the disambiguation page Blackened that is not simply a partial title match. As there are no other articles which could be called "Blackened", the qualifier is unnecessary. Neelix (talk) 15:53, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Samanda → Sam and Amanda Marchant — They have always been known as Sam and Amanda, even at their time in the house, the nickname was given to them by the press and is not used often other than their brief but minor pop career. Donnie Park (talk) 11:27, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Wirtland (building) → Wirtland — This has a bit of a complicated history so probably best to see the talk page. In short there's some disagreement about which is more notable.

- (Discuss) — Royal Conservatory of Music → The Royal Conservatory of Music — "The" is a key element of The Royal Conservatory's of Music's name. It has been used throughout its history and is included in its current emblem. The "The" distinguishes it from other music schools with similar names. Mjk17 (talk) 21:24, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

- (Discuss) — 2009 flu pandemic by country → 2009 flu pandemic by continent — I proposed this move 5 days ago, putting notices up on several related article talk pages, and only one other editor has commented in support of a move. (Given the lack of response, the move can hardly be deemed controversial, since the article and subarticles are organised that way.) Once moved, the former title can simply host a list of country articles. I'd do the move myself, but there seems to be some sort of block prohibiting article moves ... perhaps due to dickery? - (Discuss) — Chiţcani, Moldova → Chiţcani — The other two uses of "Chiţcani" are for villages, which lack administrative status and are now linked to at the top for disambiguation purposes. - (Discuss) — Algernon Sydney → Algernon Sidney — The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and the biographies of Sidney printed by the Cambridge University Press and the Princeton University Press (amongst others) used an 'i' instead of a 'y' in Algernon's second name. It is the preferred spelling used by almost everyone who writes on Sidney. User:Johnbull 19:50, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Peer-to-peer → Peer-to-peer (network architecture) — "Peer-to-peer" is used both to refer to the network architecture and to peer-to-peer file sharing (and some others). Readers and editors often expect to see an article about file sharing here, which is why this article is more popular than its client-server counterpart, why most of the what-links-here link here in the context of file sharing, and why a lot of content that belongs in file-sharing frequently ends up being added here. A redirect page at peer-to-peer will make this distinction, and link to both the move destination and file sharing. It would also let us look at the stats tool over the course of one day to determine where readers are actually going. M 19:33, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — User:Liz Beres/KEIGWIN+COMPANY → KEIGWIN + COMPANY — When I requested the name of this page to be changed from Liz Beres to KEIGWIN + COMPANY, I was told that KEIGWIN + COMPANY was on the black list of names and therefore could not be confirmed. This is the only proper title for this page and those interested in learning about the dance company will not be able to find it if this change is not approved. Thank you for respecting our behest. - (Discuss) — Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom → Elizabeth II — Just add this here so it's listed at the requested moves page, so admins can see (all the reasoning and discussion is already above the box (and now below it too), so I won't be adding a reason here). --~Knowzilla (Talk) 15:37, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — American Beaver → Canadian Beaver — The proper scientific name of this animal is 'Castor canadensis', quite literally "Canadian Beaver". A Google search for "Canadian Beaver" yields 68,200 results while "American Beaver" yields only 58,500 or 16.6% less - a significant difference. The Beaver is also a profoundly important national symbol in Canada, where it is just any other animal in the United States, limited primarily to its north. If there is no consensus once again for this move, an alternative name might be "Beaver (Castor canadensis)" which would give you the common name used throughout its natural habitat with the scientific name for disambiguation; however, I believe there is ample reason to make it "Canadian Beaver". - Nbpolitico (talk) 13:13, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — John Young (astronaut) → John Watts Young — Using his full name (currently a redirect) would seem better than using his first and last names with a disambiguator, per WP:NCP. --GW… 12:56, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union → Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia — Page should be moved because, as the article itself states, this is the official English name for the organisation. Informal names can be given secondarily. For verification see: [1]. Is potentially controversial because move has been requested before, albeit to a different name. --Fliptank po (talk) 09:08, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

- (Discuss) — Gwon Yul → Kwon Yul — According to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean) and McCune-Reischauer romanization, the Korean family name "권" should be romanized as "Kwon", not "Gwon", just like the family name '김' is romanized as "Kim", not "Gim"; As an evidence of established English usage, Wikipedia's article for Korean family name "권" is "Kwon", not "Gwon", and all nine biographic articles of people with family name Kwon are all titled "Kwon", not "Gwon".Hkwon (talk) 21:49, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

- (Discuss) — Keith House (disambiguation) → Keith House — Move disambiguation page to "Keith House" name, as there is no obvious primary usage for this name. (Think about it, have you ever heard of any "Keith House" before? Any one that is NRHP-listed is no more important than another, and it was random whether an editor in Texas was active before one in Arkansas. doncram (talk) 06:57, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

- (Discuss) — Supporters of marriage equality in the United States → Marriage equality movement — Politicians and pressure groups are united to create social change in civil marriage laws, which they themselves call the "marriage equality" movement. Considering this was birthed out of a long section in the Same-sex marriage in the United States page and defined in opposition to the "Traditional marriage movement", the political movement rather than personal opinions about the marriages themselves are covered.

- (Discuss) — Clarksville Historic District (disambiguation) → Clarksville Historic District — Move Austin Texas page to properly disambiguated name including (City, State). Move disambiguation page of equally significant places, none primary, to the regular disambiguation page name. The disambiguation page was only moved here--combatively, i felt--by an editor who asserted the primacy of the one in Austin, Texas because, randomly, an article had been created for it first. Now several stub articles have been created, all currently equal in their sourcing, that they have just one source (the NRIS database footnote). Please allow restoration of the previous status quo. doncram (talk) 19:43, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Gas mask → Air supply mask — Can the article be moved to "air supply mask" or alternatively breathing mask? gas masks is a misleading term, it refers to the dispensing of any gas; which is inaccurate. only air is actually supplied (in diving, some mixtures with helium or high percentages of oxygen are used too but this still isn suffice to make the term gas mask a proper term. oxygen mask wasnt a good term as it supplies air (mixture with less than 1% oxygen). also, include jet aircraft masks, airline oxygen masks, second lungs/rebreathers and divers masks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.176.211.188 (talk) 17:12, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

- (Discuss) — Ojibwa → Ojibwe — I think we should finally move "Ojibwa" and related items to "Ojibwe". As Leo1410 writes above on this page, Ojibwe "is the spelling in the double-vowel alphabet and is more likely to be pronounced correctly in English than Ojibwa is".. The article on the language has already been moved to Ojibwe language. As Jomeara421 wrote when requestng that move: "This is now the most commonly used English spelling in academics works by scholars of Ojibwe: John Nichols (multiple publications), John Nichols and Earl Nyholm, J. Randolph Valentine (multiple publications). It is also the spelling that most closely reflects the pronunciation of the word in the language itself. It is also widely used in other contemporary linguistically oriented publications, for multiple dialects." Non-academic usage seems to be all over the place and actual Indian groups write Chippewa, Ojibwa, Ojibwe, Ojibway, so there doesn't seem to be any consensus from that perspective. - (Discuss) — Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec → Salaberry-de-Valleyfield — The main article title is proposing to rename and move to Salaberry-de-Valleyfield to match Canadian city related titles without including the province name. For example Montreal, Quebec City, Longueuil, Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivières, Gatineau, Drummondville, Victoriaville, Matane, Rimouski, Rivière-du-Loup, Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d'Or and Thetford Mines all have titles without including the province name. - (Discuss) — Clan Campbell of Strachur → Campbell of Strachur — Campbell of Strachur is not a recognissed clan, but the branch of Clan Campbell, and should be listed without the destinction of beeing a Scottish clan in its own right. Article was moved from Campbells (of Strachur) by User:QuintusPetillius, 20 July 2008, for reason given: "As per frmat of other branches of the clans". I do not consider this reason to now be true, consensus was reached to drop the term clan on clan branch articles, dated May 2009, see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Clans of Scotland#Naming of branch articles. User:QuintusPetillius was involved in this dicussion. I have posted a copy of these reasons at User talk:QuintusPetillius. In the meantime Bishop of Kilmore has become a disambig page. I've been going through the Irish bishop articles and am trying to create some consistency with them - Archbishop of Cashel, Bishop of Derry, Bishop of Killaloe, etc., they all include the pre-Reformation, Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic bishops. - (Discuss) — Bagram Air Base → Bagram Airfield — Above are many reasons why this page should be moved to reflect the proper naming of the installation. The name of this base is Bagram Airfield, regardless of what other websites official or not call it. Notably the fact that signs, letterheads -- basically anything on this base that has print refers to the installation as Bagram Airfield. It is known by all who are deployed here as BAF -- Bagram Airfield. It isn't about a pissing match between branches -- I'm in the Air Force. I'm sure a Marine would agree, so would a Sailor. I'm rather disappointed from the above comments regarding this a non-important issue. I wouldn't call Microsoft Micro-soft and tell people the name doesn't matter. It definitely does. This almost appears to be somebody who has no subject matter knowledge trying to tell people who have either been here or people like me who see the signs with Bagram Airfield ON this installation everyday that we are wrong because Google search references say so. -JE (talk) 18:57, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

- (Discuss) — Princess Alexander of Belgium → Princess Alexandre of Belgium — As the non-dynastic wife of Prince Alexandre of Belgium it is incorrect to call Léa Wolman by her maiden name, because she is no longer known by it (and never was to most English-speakers, since her notability dates from marriage), nor "Princess Léa of Belgium" because that title is specifically reserved by Belgian law for those on whom the title has been expressly conferred: since 1991 it is no longer legally or socially acquired by marriage to a "Prince of Belgium", a fact she acknowledges in the article itself. Moreover, Léa Wolman remains best known in English-language usage as Princess Alexandre of Belgium, therefore Wikipedia's Naming conventions call for use of that style for the article's namespace. - Lethiere (talk) 03:13, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Union councils of Pakistan → Union Councils of Pakistan — I think this should be moved back to it's original name as official gov usage should really be reflected here, see Wikipedia:BUREAUCRACY and Wikipedia:ENGVAR. Pahari Sahib 12:31, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Merano → Meran — As per discussion on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names) (and as announced on Talk:Province of Bolzano-Bozen/Naming) the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Province of Bolzano-Bozen section has been modified and as the city of Merans population is listed on page 6 of the official linguistic survey of the area to be 51,50% German, 48,01% Italian and 0,49% Ladin and in accordance with the new and uncontested modifications to the naming convention regarding locations in the aforementioned province the the article needs to be moved to Meran. noclador (talk) 22:31, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — VZ-9 AV Avrocar → Avro Canada VZ-9 AV Avrocar — Typically aircraft are recognized by the manufacturer's name and common name. In this case, Avro Canada is important to the title s it designated the company while the VZ-9 AV designation is the way the project was "buried" while "Avrocar" was also in common use. In order to give the article its true designation, it is better written as "Avro Canada VZ-9 AV Avrocar". FWiW Bzuk (talk) 19:35, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- (Discuss) — Harrier Jump Jet family → BAe/McDonnell-Douglas Harrier family — This article seems to be engendered a great deal of confusion as to the title. I believe that the title should be "BAe/McDonnell-Douglas Harrier family" as the "Jump Jet" was never an official designation. It was more akin to a P.R. invention. Keeping the title consistent with all the other daughter articles also makes sense. The move back and forth was the product of a campaign to move a variety of article titles to a particular individual's choice of titles. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 19:13, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

- (Discuss) — Alan Scott → Green Lantern (Alan Scott) — This is a clear case of naming conventions, most common names. Although the character was briefly known as Sentinel, the most prevalent name, across multiple mediums is Green Lantern. The character has a 70 year history, and the a brief name change would be similar to calling Superman's page "Clark Kent" due to his months as Gangbuster. The most common name for the character across the span of the course of the character is Green Lantern. -Sharp962 (talk) 03:04, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
